WTF! UK drug adviser fired after saying marijuana, Ecstasy and LSD less dangerous than alcohol
LONDON (AP) — Britain's top drug adviser was fired Friday after saying that marijuana, Ecstasy and LSD were less dangerous than alcohol.
David Nutt's comments have embarrassed the British government, which toughened the penalties for possessing marijuana earlier this year over the protests of many prominent British scientists.
This man speaks the truth! WTF is the with the British givernment?
Britain's Home Office confirmed that Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology, had been removed from his position and said it would be seeking a replacement shortly.
In Britain, drugs are classified in three different categories, with Class A the most dangerous one. Marijuana was recently upgraded to Class B from Class C, joining amphetamines, Ritalin and pholcodine as drugs whose unlawful possession could result in up to five years in prison.
And I thought US marijuana laws were harsh!

None. Not one. Never was.
Not so for me!
This has been killing me, even more recently! Is there or is there NOT! I'd really love to know the answer!
Confused and doubtful. Every event, every passing moment makes me question the possibility, or maybe just doesn't care?
Doesn't care... That would explain a lot. There is but doesn't really care. Explains all the bad results.
O' the times I've yearned for an answer, I begged and begged for an answer. Are you there?! please let know! I can't continue living like this!
A clue! just a clue!
I have no agenda, I'm not on a mission! I'm a clueless sheep lost without a shepherd!
The shepherd is dead, either that or there were never a shepherd, or maybe never cared.
The wolf is our shepherd now.

The hell with Republicans!
Proof that the GOP has lost its mind is the recent opposition by some Republicans to the amendment pushed by Al Franken, that held defense contractors accountable for sexual assault, discrimination and battery. Not all republicans voted against it, but all who voted against it were republicans! So now the GOP is in favor of rapists?! The hell!
Al Franken is a hero of mine and I'm ever more disgusted by the Republican party.

The case for Mary Jane
Currently I get my stuff for around $20 per gram and I get more pleasure out of it than a comparable (in terms of price) amount of tobacco or alcohol. But it is not about price, and I'm more than willing to pay taxes on them and pay more for my health care as it should also be for fat people, smokers and alcohol consumers (not just alcoholics). I don't care if the stuff go up to a $100 (after all the taxes), still worth it to me.
I believe marijuana is a lesser evil than alcohol, and rationalwiki backs me up
Its effects at these doses are best likened to those of moderate alcohol consumption, but without the same degree of motor impairment and without the disinhibition towards aggressionWhich is also my own experience with them. When high, I'm still more aware and more conscious of my actions than when I were drunk, fully aware of being high and avoiding anything that could get me in trouble (driving a car, stabbing people, etc..). All while enjoying myself more and not having to suffer a horrible hangover or anything afterwards. I just sober up and get on with my life.
The discrimination against pot smokers is ridiculous, and it is a product of negative advertising and racism more than anything else.
You'd be actually reducing crime if you legalize pot, and the federal government and the state would be reeking in the millions from taxes on marijuana.
Cannabis was legal, and only was banned recently!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_history_of_cannabis_in_the_United_States
A product of this era:
That's the thing. If pot is legalized we'll get rid of the dealers, and will obtain it like we obtain tobacco and alcohol.
[source]
Now someone says "think of the children?" I say if their parents are incapable of raising them and making it clear to them that something are for kids and somethings are not, then fuck 'em!
Actually if anything marijuana tax money can be spent on helping children. Helping the whole economy! the government is instead wasting millions fighting endless wars like "War on Drugs" and "War on Terror". Robbing us of our freedoms at the same time!
And how is legalization bad? children wont suddenly start smoking it just because it is legal.
And when did I say I want it to be made accessible for teenagers? or I want teenagers to be high?
Just the fact that I don't mind it being taxed to $100 per gram shows that I don't want it to be accessible to everyone, especially underage kids.
Alcohol has known medical benefits, sure! every time I see a drunk driver, I go there is someone who was drinking for the medical benefits.
The absurdities we go through!
Prison sentences and fines just for possession.
Otherwise innocent people, just for smoking it, end up in jail! This is not right and not fair!
Discrimination...
The fact that more deadly mind altering drugs (alcohol and nicotine) are allowed and cannabis isn't.
I'm talking about individual freedoms that doesn't come at the cost of others'.
Murder and theft cause extreme harm (and sometimes death) for the people affected by the crime.
What does the effect smoking marijuana in private has on anyone? Someone in his house not bothering anyone is no criminal.
That's why it is called a recreational drug! recreational! some people miss that part!
When the government makes a substance illegal then they give a monopoly to gangs. People have to go to the gangs to get the substance so the gangs influence and power increases. The police being to monitor them and so the gangs begin to obtain guns to fight back. People begin to get hurt because of police involvement, rivalries between gangs and deals involving large quantities of the substance that go sour.
If the government makes it legal the the average Joe isn't going to purchase it from gangs and so their income falls, eventually leading to fewer crimes such as theft and murder.
But that wont happen as long as it remains illegal. In order for people to not abuse it and use it sensibly the government needs to educate people. As long as the government refuses to make it legal and wont educate people so they wont abuse the drug it will just become a symbol of freedom. Lies, such as its entirely harmless, spread and people see the government as oppressors. Keeping it illegal until people are mature enough to use it isn't going to work as people will just become more immature as long as it is forbidden. Exactly like the teenager who will abuse alcohol because it was always forbidden rather than the teenager who was given the choice to use it and knew about its consequences.
It isn't 'why should we make legal?' but rather 'why is it illegal?'. If people want it then that should be reason enough. Lets apply your argument to something else: 'Why should gay marriage be legal? Just because gays want it doesn't mean it should be legal, they need more of a reason'. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense now does it? You seem to be under the impression that the government is here to give us certain liberties. This isn't true. The government is elected by the people to keep them safe, if a law has no purpose to keep people safe then it only serves to block their liberties. If people want to smoke it and it has more harmful effects illegal than harmful effect legal then make it legal.

The Japan That Can Say No; Ironning of...
Brace yourselves, this is gonna get worst before getting worst!
In 1989 there was an interesting book "The Japan That Can Say No" co-written by Akio Morita Shintaro Ishihara.
You can buy the book from Amazon, but I didn't knowing that it'll only piss me off and I'll end up tearing it apart. The full text of the book is also available here.
The book argues about how Japan can use its technological supremcy to pressure America into becoming its bitch. No, I'm not joking! Go ahead and read the book!
It also says that Americans are fat, stupid lazy and racist. At least it got something right ^_^
It goes on and on about the Japanese spirit, and how the Japanese are forward looking. Chapter 2 of the book is all "Japanese look 10 years ahead while Americans only look 10 minutes ahead" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over!
20 years later the book is funny. There is so much to laugh about in retrospective.
* The burst of the Japanese bubble economy by the beginning of the 1990s.
* The 10 year recession that followed.
* The rise of the Internet and how American companies capatilized on that while the Japanse missed the boat.
* And best bit is what this thread is about...
One of the arguments in the book is that Japan should use its semiconductor supremacy to pressure the USofA.
Quote 1 about Japanese semiconductors supremecy:
If, for example, Japan sold chips to the Soviet Union and stopped selling them to the U.S., this would upset the entire military balance. Some Americans say that if Japan were thinking of doing that, it would be occupied. Certainly, this is an age where things could come to that. The more technology advances, the more the U.S. and the Soviet Union will become dependent upon the initiative of the Japanese people -- this is getting crazy now, but the point is clear.
The 1 megabit semiconductors which are used in the hearts of computers, which carry hundreds of millions of circuits in an area which is one-third the size of your little fingernail, are only made in Japan. Japan has nearly a 100 percent share of these 1 megabit semiconductors.
Does he realize how outdated 1 megabit was! Even in 1989!
Quote 3 about Japanese semiconductors supremecy:
America went after cheap labor and set up factories in Southeast Asia, where they could make 256k chips (1/4 the capacity of 1 megabit chips), but they could not catch Japan. Now, Japan is at least 5 years ahead of the U.S. in this area and the gap is widening. There is even some kinds of basic research which cannot be accomplished without using one of these advanced computers. It take excellent computers in order to develop other advanced computers -- it is a cycle of technology. In other words, the bigger the gap in advanced computer technology, the more difficult it is to catch up.
Does this guy research anything?!
It seems they only looked 2 years ahead instead of 20.
In 1989 when the book was written and at the height of the Japanese bubble, things were like this:
NEC Semiconductors Japan
Toshiba Semiconductors Japan
Hitachi Semiconductors Japan

Analog Devices USAAkio Morita claims that America is dependent on Japanese computers (software/hardware).
Computer terminals are in short supply and are being rapidly developed in Japan. Japan should let America know what the situation is and make the U.S. realize that the relationship between the two nations is increasingly mutually dependent.
No one said it better than Steve Jobs: "The Japanese have hit the shores like dead fish. They're just like dead fish washing up on the shores."
Though he is right on this:
Therefore, the only thing that Americans or Europeans can do to correct this imbalance is reassess themselves and make an effort to produce products which are attractive to Japanese consumers. It is in this area where I would like to see Japanese politicians get courage enough to expound abroad to our trading partners.
Ishiara brags about other things like Japan's highspeed rail, while neglecting to mention that it didn't turn a profit and incurred heavy debts until it was privatized. (src)
And how Japanese rice cooker CPUs are better than x86s, 68Ks, etc... He didn't really say it like that, but here's what he said:
This dependence on the market for supporting mass production can be seen in that America did not have the vast and diverse needs for semiconductors, as Japan did in rice cookers and other household appliances. In Japan, these sizable and diverse needs created the market for semiconductor production.
One major historical fallacy is:
During the Second World War, Americans bombed civilian targets in Germany, but only on Japan did they use the atomic bomb. While they refuse to admit it, the only reason they could use the atomic bomb on Japan was because of their racial attitude toward Japan. The fact that they actually dropped the atomic bomb on Japan is sufficient indication that racial prejudice was a factor.
Another delusion is that Japan is a world leader in the (non-existent) 5th generation computers and it can, again, use it to pressure the USofA.
At the present time, Soviet technology allows these missiles to hit within a 60 meter accuracy, while for the U.S., it is 15 meters, and there is concern that this 15 meters has to be brought down to zero. This type of precision calls for a more complex orbit the further the attack proceeds, and only artificial intelligence can ensure accuracy. It may well be that America was the 4th generation leader and that the 1 megabit and several megabit devices which will support the next, the 5th generation, can be developed by American know-how. However, to use this know-how across diverse applications, including weapons, requires a country with dramatically advanced production management; it is only Japan that can deliver on it.
From Wikipedia:
The Fifth Generation Computer Systems project (FGCS) was an initiative by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, begun in 1982, to create a "fifth generation computer" (see history of computing hardware) which was supposed to perform much calculation using massive parallel processing. It was to be the end result of a massive government/industry research project in Japan during the 1980s. It aimed to create an "epoch-making computer" with supercomputer-like performance and usable artificial intelligence capabilities. Failure The FGCS Project did not meet with commercial success for reasons similar to the Lisp machine companies and Thinking Machines. The highly parallel computer architecture was eventually surpassed in speed by less specialized hardware (for example, Sun workstations and Intel x86 machines). The project did produce a new generation of promising Japanese researchers. But after the FGCS Project, MITI stopped funding large-scale computer research projects, and the research momentum developed by the FGCS Project dissipated. It should be noted, however, that MITI/ICOT embarked on a Sixth Generation Project in the 1990s.
When looking at the actions of the Japanese people these days, I recall that these seem similar to ET, the extra-terrestrial, in the Speilburg films. I feel that it may well be the Japanese people will evolve into something like ET with pronounced eyes and noses and a big head making them top-heavy, over an abnormally thin body and slender arms and legs.
Since I'm a gaming fan, I found the fact that the PS3 uses a CPU, GPU and RAM by American companies, extremely ironic, especially when you consider that Akio Morita is Sony's co-founder. Too bad Morita didn't live to see it happen! I would have traded the world for a chance of going to Japan and LOLing at him and Ishihara!
"You two said what?! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
(1) I love Japan, I was in fact listening to J-Pop while writing this piece. It just that is pisses me off (a little) the Anti-Americanism in the book, and since hindsight is 20/20 I can laugh all I want about visions and predictions that didn't come true.
(2) Ishihara is no more of an idiot than the right-wing extremists here in the USofA.
* Computers made by Toshiba, Sony, etc.. now are nothing but shells that contain CPUs, GPUs and software from American companies. Unlike how it was in the 1980s and 1990s when the Japanese had their own independent designs.
** He surprisingly exceeds me in delusion and truthiness.

Spiking the water
Drinking water which contains the element lithium may reduce the risk of suicide, a Japanese study suggests.
Researchers examined levels of lithium in drinking water and suicide rates in the prefecture of Oita, which has a population of more than one million.
This scares the shit out of me, the whole idea that the local government would spike the water to make us emotionally numb. It is not all lost, thankfully, lithium is toxic and will eventually kill you.
I Love Swine Flu
Swine Flu couldn't come at a better time, I was already getting bored of the current news.
And I don't care how many people die, I don't care if it kills me.
To quote George Carlin:
I enjoy chaos and disorder, not just because they help me professionally, they're also my hobby, you see, I'm an entropy fan. I'm an entropy fan, when I first heard of entropy in high school science I was attracted to it immediately. When they told me that in nature all systems are breaking down, I thought what a good thing, what a good thing, perhaps I can make some small contribution in this area myself.
And of course it's not just in nature, in this country, the whole social structure just beginning to collapse, you watch, just beginning now to come apart at the edges and the seams. And the thing I like about that, is that it means it makes the news on television more interesting,...

Theology?!
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God."
I'm not someone to deny the possible existence of a creator.
I just think that said creator either doesn't care or isn't taking it too seriously.
Sometimes I believe we are in a uberversion of The Sims.

HowTo: fsck yourself?!
- Make sure you have an fsck capable computer. Usually this means that your computer is running an operating system (OS) capable of fscking, to find out simply launch an X Terminal emulator and type in fsck. Example of such OSes are GNU/Linux, BSD, AIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and other certified UNIX OSes. I assume Windows is capable of fscking if you install CygWin.
- Have a USB-to-Anus cable ready and used to connect yourself to the computer. Simply plug in the USB side to the USB port on your computer and the Anus side to your Anus. The Anus connector should be easily identifiable and not confused with the USB connector, since it resembles a vibrator.
- Once connected type in cat /dev/me. If nothing appears make sure anus.d daemon is installed and running and that you are recognized by the OS. Depending on the OS version a driver for your Anus might be provided by the OS vendor, check the vendor's website to learn more, if not you may need to write one yourself. Everyone's anus is different though we are all the same.
- Finally simply type in fsck /dev/me and that's how you go and fsck yourself.
I thought of adding diagrams but feared they'd be considered too shocking. Nothing like self-censorship!

They may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR PORN!
China Launches Crackdown on Internet Pornography
BEIJING (AP) -- China warned Google and other popular Web portals Monday that they must do more to block pornographic material from reaching Chinese users, the latest in a series of government crackdowns targeting Internet content.
The crackdown focused on pornography but is part of a larger Chinese effort to control freedom of expression and root out material it considers destabilizing, such as sites that criticize the Communist Party, promote democratic reform or advocate Taiwan independence.
Pornography is banned in China but remains widely available on and off the Internet. Popular Chinese Web portals frequently show sexually explicit pictures and provide links to pornographic Web sites.
I don't understand the Chinese government, if anything they should be in favor of pornography. For starters the Chinese government is communist and thus a nonreligious state, there is a lot of money to be made out of porn and more importantly, porn will keep the people's mind off how badly they are being treated by the totalitarian regime.
If anything I believe this is not a ban on all porn, just a ban on free porn. China is still the number one country when it comes to money spend on porn.
Enough with the Polar Bears are extinct nonsense!
Rapid growth spurt leaves amount of ice at levels seen 29 years ago.
Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.
Ice levels had been tracking lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly recovered in the last quarter. In fact, the rate of increase from September onward is the fastest rate of change on record, either upwards or downwards.
The data is being reported by the University of Illinois's Arctic Climate Research Center, and is derived from satellite observations of the Northern and Southern hemisphere polar regions.
Each year, millions of square kilometers of sea ice melt and refreeze. However, the mean ice anomaly -- defined as the seasonally-adjusted difference between the current value and the average from 1979-2000, varies much more slowly. That anomaly now stands at just under zero, a value identical to one recorded at the end of 1979, the year satellite record-keeping began.
...
In May, concerns over disappearing sea ice led the U.S. to officially list the polar bear a threatened species, over objections from experts who claimed the animal's numbers were increasing.
