Criminal Politicians (Japan Edition)

The consumption tax will be raised to 8% 4/2014 and then to 10% by 10/2015. I guess Japan wants to ensure that I leave. It's not like things aren't pretty pricey as-is right now!! Those politicians seem to forget that the consumption tax hurts the lower and middle class. What they should be striving for is an asshole tax on all the assholes running the government in Shinjuku, starting with dumbass Ishihara Shintaro. How much does the Imperial family blow on blow every year? You got yourself some mighty savings right there.

Increasing the consumption tax is criminal as it will hurt the lower income classes and will increase the price of essential goods. What they should do instead is subsidize essential goods and increase the corporate income tax and the luxury tax on certain products like the Toyota Century (about ¥11,500,000) which I saw everywhere when I used to live in Osaka.

Increasing the consumption tax will cause people to consume less and less, not what any sane person desires. Less consumption means less sales and a worse economy overall. A higher consumption tax will lower the purchasing power of the yen and will put a squeeze on people who are already living paycheck to paycheck.

While things aren't rosy, I just blew 4 months of my life doing nothing, it ain't bad either. I got myself a social circle, I'm not alone anymore. I made lots of new friends and some I grew to become very close to them. I also reconnected with some of my old friends, rediscovering who the hell I am. I'm still single and still procrastinating. However, I rediscovered my passion for reading and have been reading lots of books. As soon as this year ends, I'm going to focus on passing my entrance exam this February, with that hurdle cleared I can start working on my research again. Sure by then I would have blown thru 5 months not amounting to much but sometimes in life you need that. I still have 2 years to sort out my graduate studies and research. I can't claim that I feel better than I've ever felt in my life, but this past week has been the best since I moved here. Nothing is perfect, but I have moved a few stones above rock bottom.

My life, so far, peaked earlier this year when I used to live in Sendai and then hell broke on 3/11, I had to leave Japan and then a month later my only option was to move to Osaka and it has been downhill ever since. A month ago I moved to Tsukuba, as I was recently accepted as a research student into University of Tsukuba one of the top universities in Japan and my life hit rock bottom. Broke up with my girlfriend of a year and a half, a girl who I cared deeply about, no social connections and no friends in a new city and a boring city at that. A pathetically small town attached to a university and a dozen or so research institutes a far cry from Sendai or Osaka. It almost feels deserted, everything is inconveniently far, there is no subways or trains running within the city. I could go on complaining more about my personal life but my academic life is even at a worse state. With no carrot and stick I don't feel motivated to do anything, I'm not even sure about my research topic to even start doing research which is what I'm supposed to do as a research student before becoming a Master's student next March. These 6 months are supposed to give me a head start but I lack the will and the vision to move forward. I want to do research in Parallel computing but even that is still a too wide of a topic and while I'm supposed to do some reading and research to help me on that, I've got the books and everything else to start I just seem to procrastinate that ended up leading me to depression and demotivation. I wish if I can get my life back on track, I wish the earthquake never happened, I wish I was still in Sendai with my friends, my ex-girlfriend and with the clear vision I had then...

As the sun sets it also rises, now that I hit rock bottom the only way to go is up, build a new social network and get my academic life into shape.

I always found it absurd that marijuana, the one drug that never really killed anyone is treated as if it is the devil's seed, while alcohol kills people and ruins lives and yet absolutely legal. More than that, not a day goes by without a story in the news about some legal drug having deadly side effects, let alone stories about people hooked on them. So why is marijuana, probably the least harmful of all mind altering drugs, illegal?

Currently I get my stuff for around $20 per gram and I get more pleasure out of it than a comparable (in terms of price) amount of tobacco or alcohol. But it is not about price, and I'm more than willing to pay taxes on them and pay more for my health care as it should also be for fat people, smokers and alcohol consumers (not just alcoholics). I don't care if the stuff go up to a $100 (after all the taxes), still worth it to me.

I believe marijuana is a lesser evil than alcohol, and rationalwiki backs me up

Which is also my own experience with them. When high, I'm still more aware and more conscious of my actions than when I were drunk, fully aware of being high and avoiding anything that could get me in trouble (driving a car, stabbing people, etc..). All while enjoying myself more and not having to suffer a horrible hangover or anything afterwards. I just sober up and get on with my life.

The discrimination against pot smokers is ridiculous, and it is a product of negative advertising and racism more than anything else.

You'd be actually reducing crime if you legalize pot, and the federal government and the state would be reeking in the millions from taxes on marijuana.

When the government makes a substance illegal then they give a monopoly to gangs. People have to go to the gangs to get the substance so the gangs influence and power increases. The police being to monitor them and so the gangs begin to obtain guns to fight back. People begin to get hurt because of police involvement, rivalries between gangs and deals involving large quantities of the substance that go sour.
If the government makes it legal the the average Joe isn't going to purchase it from gangs and so their income falls, eventually leading to fewer crimes such as theft and murder.

But that wont happen as long as it remains illegal. In order for people to not abuse it and use it sensibly the government needs to educate people. As long as the government refuses to make it legal and wont educate people so they wont abuse the drug it will just become a symbol of freedom. Lies, such as its entirely harmless, spread and people see the government as oppressors. Keeping it illegal until people are mature enough to use it isn't going to work as people will just become more immature as long as it is forbidden. Exactly like the teenager who will abuse alcohol because it was always forbidden rather than the teenager who was given the choice to use it and knew about its consequences.

It isn't 'why should we make legal?' but rather 'why is it illegal?'. If people want it then that should be reason enough. Lets apply your argument to something else: 'Why should gay marriage be legal? Just because gays want it doesn't mean it should be legal, they need more of a reason'. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense now does it? You seem to be under the impression that the government is here to give us certain liberties. This isn't true. The government is elected by the people to keep them safe, if a law has no purpose to keep people safe then it only serves to block their liberties. If people want to smoke it and it has more harmful effects illegal than harmful effect legal then make it legal.

In 1989 there was an interesting book "The Japan That Can Say No" co-written by Akio Morita Shintaro Ishihara.

You can buy the book from Amazon, but I didn't knowing that it'll only piss me off and I'll end up tearing it apart. The full text of the book is also available here.

The book argues about how Japan can use its technological supremcy to pressure America into becoming its bitch. No, I'm not joking! Go ahead and read the book!
It also says that Americans are fat, stupid lazy and racist. At least it got something right ^_^

It goes on and on about the Japanese spirit, and how the Japanese are forward looking. Chapter 2 of the book is all "Japanese look 10 years ahead while Americans only look 10 minutes ahead" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over!

20 years later the book is funny. There is so much to laugh about in retrospective.
* The burst of the Japanese bubble economy by the beginning of the 1990s.
* The 10 year recession that followed.
* The rise of the Internet and how American companies capatilized on that while the Japanse missed the boat.

Go fsck yourself is a widely used and popular interweb phrase, and now I'm going to tell you how to fsck yourself!

Make sure you have an fsck capable computer. Usually this means that your computer is running an operating system (OS) capable of fscking, to find out simply launch an X Terminal emulator and type in fsck. Example of such OSes are GNU/Linux, BSD, AIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and other certified UNIX OSes. I assume Windows is capable of fscking if you install CygWin.
Have a USB-to-Anus cable ready and used to connect yourself to the computer. Simply plug in the USB side to the USB port on your computer and the Anus side to your Anus. The Anus connector should be easily identifiable and not confused with the USB connector, since it resembles a vibrator.
Once connected type in cat /dev/me. If nothing appears make sure anus.d daemon is installed and running and that you are recognized by the OS. Depending on the OS version a driver for your Anus might be provided by the OS vendor, check the vendor's website to learn more, if not you may need to write one yourself. Everyone's anus is different though we are all the same.
Finally simply type in fsck /dev/me and that's how you go and fsck yourself.

If anything I believe this is not a ban on all porn, just a ban on free porn. China is still the number one country when it comes to money spend on porn.

This is a bit of a technical rant, but a rant nonetheless!

Chrome is out and is Windows only! It's a great browser, I was impressed by what it offers, but it is a shame I can't get to use it, often, since my main OS of choice isn't Windows.

Now I'm wondering, but how did it miss the development team to make Chrome cross-platform from the get-go? All the technologies Chrome is based on, that I know of, are cross-platform, how hard is it to make whatever Google developed in-house from scratch cross-platform as well?

I personally wont mind a Wine-port, a la Picasa, given obviously that it works, Picasa works and works pretty well, this would be beneficial to Wine, since getting Chrome to work on Wine will require fixes to Wine's SSL implementation.

Last week I bought a brand new toaster, was just right for me and just right for my budget, plus it came with a 2-year warranty. What could go wrong?
Well.. of all the things that could possibly go wrong, the lever's lock-thingy broke! Now I have to keep on depressing it myself!
I'll have to go replace it now, damn what a nuisance! I'm just glad it came with a warranty.
The toaster itself is pretty good, comes with twin wide bays and can toast 4 slices of bread simultaneously but unfortunately it doesn't run NetBSD.

Every now and there you come across a song that you can never shake off nor get bored of, and some songs really stick. One of them is Endless Love Endless Road, I've been listening to this song since 2002. The album which this song is a part of was released in Japan by DigiCube on October 11, 2001. I'm not a fan of this type of music usually, as I generally prefer listening to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, but this particular song, has been on my playlist ever since, even before I read the translation or understood a single word. It just shows that feelings can be expressed and people can realize them and feel them, regardless of the language or form used, and I think this is really great. I've always had a soft spot for aesthetics, and designs the convey warm and hearty emotions, I guess that why I'm an Apple fan, even without realizing the technical advancements in their products.

Any country that wants to rule, economically or militarily, needs a strong innovative state-of- the-art manufacturing industry. In the times of war and peace you need technology, to create jobs, attract minds and maintain your grip on the rest of the world.

Recently grabbed my attention a story about a student that was suspended for ... buying Skittles! Imagine that! Buying skittles can get you suspended and out of the honor society! Now the kid will grow up, fearing anything he might do would be against the regulations, so much for freedom.

As we all know New Haven is where a lot of them 'educated' white liberals are supposed to live. It is odd how most of them Liberals attack religion, accusing it of being a means to controlling people, yet they go and come up with new way to control people. Candy?! that is more pathetic than Climate change!

Honestly, the story didn't come to me as a surprise, the kid 'broke' a rule, a rule that existed for the sole purpose of controlling students, ripping them away of their childhood, and turning them into carbon copies of mindless citizens with no soul or character of their own. Kids are supposed to question authority, respect is not deserved but earned. Most parents, teachers and other authorities don't deserve respect, and everything they do should be subject to questioning. But the people in authority don't want that, they want obedience, they want people who will do everything they are told and keep away from what is supposed to be 'wrong and illegal' without questioning the merits of such law and whether there are any logic behind them!

Limited to one square of toilet paper? Use a bidet!

A lot of legislators around the Good Ol' USA, are for the oddest of reasons trying to control how much toilet paper we use, as if the government has solved all our problems and that's all what is left for them to argue about. As if they have nothing better to do but dictate (and thus it is becoming a dictatorship) how we as Americans are supposed to wipe after taking a dump!

I propose a better solution, yes regulate us to one square, not a real bother to me. But make it necessary that every toilet has a bidet next to it. I'm a bidet fan, I find using toilet paper a bit too challenging, I always end up using half a roll and still not sure if I wiped myself clean, but with the Bidet Law I proposed, I can wash my bottom, and then use one square of toilet paper to dry my bottom. And if there weren't no toilet paper, it wont hurt if you didn't dry your bottom, it'll dry eventually. Everyone is a winner, the legislators who brought up the whole issue and the American people.
